DNA is derived from samples obtained by swabbing the inner cheek
with a sterile Qtip (Buccal Swab).
Samples can also be obtained by drawing blood via hypodermic
needle and syringe
for isolation of DNA from white blood cells or
by collection of DNA from blood cells contained in a
single drop of blood from a fingerprick
onto an especially treated paper.
DNA obtained from cheek swabs is identical to DNA obtained
from any other tissue from the same individual
(excluding sperm and egg cells).
The use of buccal swabs is non-invasive and avoids any health
concerns connected with blood products.
